Off the Wall

Did you know Scandinavian design team House of Rym have released a range of wall tiles. Their stunning cement tiles feature dark through to pale blues, greys and white. These subtle designs when joined together create a classic flower design, but of course, in true House of Rym style, these beauties can be mixed and matched to your hearts content. Don't have space on the wall? - these multi-purpose wonders can be used on the floor too, or why not have a single tile as a unique pot stand.

Feeling Grey

I love Garden Trading, their classic garden and kitchen designs are household essentials. They have just released a new enamel tone and it's stunning - Flint - Flint is a cool grey with blue tones. This pretty enamelware would suit a variety of colour themed homes, team with a mustard yellow or rich red for a statement look.

Spring Time Shopping

I love spring shopping, designs are always fresh, bright and smile inducing. Collating the Quince Spring ranges are always a delight, I absolutely adore my designers and every year I am astounded by their new lines, always unique and never dull. This year I've also got some new designers on board with some Scandinavian classics from Arne Clausen - the Lotus bowls are our top sellers already - and some lovely Croatian designs from Marinski Handmades - her collection of adorable snack bowls are full of character and would make lovely little gifts (arriving very soon).

As well as lots of new home wares designs this year we have extended our range to include a baking department and a pet department. The baking selection was a real joy to source, with a vast selection of unique cookie cutters, fun mixing bowls, utensils and gorgeous cup cake cases it will really put you in the baking mood. Our pet department is a real passion on mine, being a mum to a little whippet boy I know how tricky it can be to find fun and original pet accessories - step up Hiro + Wolf - amazing designers of luxury dog collars, leads and poo pouches (I know, amazing, and super handy). Their designs are all made in London with vegetable dyed leather and truly fantastic fabric, from screen printed geometric designs to Inca blankets from Bolivia - your pooch will certainly be the most handsome hound in the park.

And what's more is that for every item purchased from the pet department we will be donating £2 to a charity close to our hearts - Galgos del Sol - you can find out more about them here and also see the incredible work they do to save Galgos, Greyhounds and other dogs in Spain.

Designer Showcase #1 - Gillian Kyle

Here at Quince we will be showcasing one of our talented designers from time to time. You will get an insight into their world of design, from starting out to what inspires them.

Our first designer is Glasgow based Gillian Kyle. Famed for her fun take on traditional larder favourites. I had spotted Gillian's designs when on the hunt for a gift for my super fussy father who doesn't do the norm of football, golf, The Simpsons or beer, so buying for him is always tricky, but one thing he does like is chocolate, he has an incredibly sweet tooth, with the classics from Tunnocks being his favourite and that's when I discovered Gillian Kyle. Her unique take on Scottish classics such as Irn Bru, Mothers Pride and of course the Tunnocks lovelies, really caught my eye. For Dad, of course it had to be the Caramel Wafer mug, But now that I have found her gold mine of designs I will never be stuck for gift ideas for the chocolate lovers in my life. I hope you love Gillian's designs as much as I do. Here is her designer showcase for Quince:

Top Buys from Gillian Kyle at Quince -

Scottish Breakfast Mug            Teacake Tea Towel                Scottish Coasters

Teacake Art Print                   Cremola Coasters             Victorian Tea Towels

A word from Gillian....

What inspired you to start Gillian Kyle Designs?

I had just graduated and really didn't want to contribute to the brain-drain towards London - I think it's such a shame that so many talented Scots move away because of lack of opportunities up here. There were no design jobs to be had, obviously, so I decided to start something myself. I've always been interested in Scottish kitsch and ephemera, and I wanted to celebrate Scottishness and Britishness and try to strike a blow at the mass produced tat that typifies Scottish and British giftware!

If you were to choose one product from your range, which one could you not be without?

I absolutely love my Caramel Wafer cushion! I'm a real cushion collector...

But having said that I use my Scottish Breakfast mug every single day, and I'm pretty excited about the 'Big Fish' tea towel from my about-to-be-launched 'Fish and Chips' range.

Talk us through a day in the life of Gillian Kyle?

Up with the larks (or rather, the baby), try to get us all fed, dressed and out of the house. Drop Rufus off at nursery, grab a coffee and aim to be in the studio for 9.30. Most days are a mixture of creative stuff like researching new design ideas, drawing (always by hand) and working on designs on the Mac, and business stuff like dealing with manufacturers, keeping tabs on stock levels, marketing and general correspondence. We're about to launch a brand new all singing, all dancing website, so I've been working a lot on that recently. We quite often grab lunch at the very lovely Hidden Lane Tearoom, which is just round the corner from us, but its usually just a quick bite and then back to work. We have a juicer in the studio and juice most days which helps keep us going until  the end of the day!

What advice would you give to any up and coming designers looking to start out?

Get as much help, training and advice as you can from as many sources as possible. See if you can apply to the Princes Trust for some funding, but also plug into the other organisations out there such as the Cultural Enterprise Office. Do a business plan even if doesn't come naturally - it will be a real help. Network, even if it scares you (I'm not a natural networker but always gain something from an event). And don't be afraid to plough your own furrow - originality is a good look!

Tunnocks Teacake or Caramel Wafer, what’s in your ‘piece bag’?

Definitely a Teacake (or Teacakes, lets be honest) but its more of an afternoon tea gig for me; eaten in layers starting with the chocolate (of course).

Add some POP to your Kitchen

Sagaform have created a funky crockery set inspired by 1950's style.

Pop comes in fantastic colours and would brighten up any old kitchen or add a bit of retro charm to your contemporary work space. My favourite piece has to be the sugar bowl, it's a bit of show stopper with it's chunky lid and soft curves.

I Love Bags

I love bags, especially bright funky bags, so you can understand how excited I was when I came across Littlephant. They have some wonderful handbags that are all super spacious, my favourite has to be the Littlephant Messenger Bag that doubles up as a changing bag with a fold out changing mat, lots of pockets and a space for a bottle or two. Also the choice of fabrics are amazing, they're all Scandinavian designed and are complimented by the contrasting leather handles. The attention to detail involved in the design of these bags is second to none, and the finish is fantastic. Each bag also comes with a lovely little crochet keyring that is safe for baby to play with as well as being a decorative accessory. The Littlephant bags are definitely on my wish list...

Jane Foster's Delightful Designs

Here at Quince we are busy organising all of our lovely new stock items. So much to do and so little time...everything that comes in I can't help but take out of it's box and have a wee peek, it's amazing I haven't bought half of it already!

This afternoon I have been unpacking some lovely prints from Jane Foster. She is a super talented gal, based down in Devon all of her work is hand-pulled and designed in her studio. My favorite print so far has to be the Mr Happy Panda, he's just fab. Although designed for childrens rooms, these prints would look equally as good in your grown up living room, my panda is going to take pride of place above my fire place along with some of Jane's other prints.

Not only does Jane create and design prints, she has a wonderful range of childrens cuddle toys, made with Scandinavian inspired fabrics and with her own designs also. These little toys would make a great addition to any kids bedroom. Not only do they provide endless hours of cuddling the Number and Alphabet dogs are educational too, as Jane had originally designed them to help her daughter get a grasp of her 1,2 ,3's and her a,b,c's.
